Baron Davis Amnestied by Cavaliers

Baron Davis is as lethal an offensive point guard as they come. When he’s healthy.

Problem with Boom Dizzle over the course of his career is he hasn’t been able to stay healthy for very long in any given season. With his big salary on the books counting towards the cap, and after coming up lame this week in training camp facing months off the court to rest and rehab, the Cavaliers did the only thing they could, the used their one time amnesty exception from the new CBA. In other words they waived Davis.

As you’re already aware, Davis will still be paid his salary, and can start discussions with other teams who want to pick him up off waivers. Cleveland.com first announced the move by the Cavs:

The club used its one-time amnesty clause to clear $28 million from its salary cap over the next two seasons. The franchise must still pay him that sum, however.

“We want to thank Baron for his professionalism while he was here,” General Manager Chris Grant said. “This move gives us additional flexibility this year and next and that’s one characteristic that we have looked at as we move forward with this team.”

Davis, 32, reported to training camp Friday, but complained of lower back stiffness during a conditioning run. A second opinion, released Wednesday by the team, revealed a bulging disc (L2-3). A league source said Davis could be out for weeks, perhaps months.(Source)
