Detroit Pistons Sign Jonny Flynn

Detroit hasn’t made any gasp-worthy gaffs this off-season, and that in itself should be enough for fans. With some great picks in the drafts of the last two years–2010 (Greg Monroe), 2011 (Brandon Knight, Kyle Singler) and 2012 (Andre Drummond, Kim English)–, the Pistons look to be making positive moves so far. Sure, they still have Tayshaun Prince on a long-term ledger, but we’re focusing on positives here.

In that light, Detroit’s latest move is a bit of a head-scratcher:

Free agent point guard Jonny Flynn and the Detroit Pistons have agreed upon a one-year non-guaranteed training camp deal, CSNNW.com has learned.

Though slightly undersized, Flynn is a talented guard. With modest averages of 9.2 ppg, 4 apg, and 1.9 rpg, he doesn’t necessarily jump out at you from a stat sheet. There are also the questions some NBA teams have had when working out Flynn: has he recovered completely from his hip surgery two years ago? It must be noted that Flynn is still just 23 years old, is a speedy guard, and has apparently eased the minds of enough GMs to earn himself a contract.

The real issue here has less to do with Flynn and more to do with Detroit. The Pistons’ back-court, though not exactly loaded, seems solidified. Rodney Stuckey has earned his tenure as a starter with averages of 14.8 ppg, 2.8 apg, and 2.6 rpg and Brandon Knight looks set to improve on an equally impressive rookie campaign (12.8 ppg, 3.8 apg, 3.2 rpg). Even Will Bynum has earned his few minutes. So the question then becomes how Detroit is planning on working Flynn into the back-court mix. If I had to guess, I’d say Flynn at least overtakes Bynum for a chunk of his minutes. Other than that, it would take a pretty significant misstep from one of Detroit’s two budding stars to get Flynn any sort of considerable time.
