Perhaps the greatest individual game ever played in NBA history occurred on March 2nd, 1962, in Hershey, Pennsylvania – the now famous Wilt Chamberlain 100 point game.
The milestone was so long ago that no video evidence exists, adding to the legend and lore of arguably the greatest record in sports. But now the Philadelphia 76ers will finally own some of that history as they have purchased the legendary and authentic Hershey Arena hardwood floor from Hershey Entertainment and Resorts.
In an effort to both give back to the fans and to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Wilt’s magical game, the Sixers will be giving every fan in attendance at the March 2nd Sixers/Warriors game a 2×2 commemorative cut-out of the original floor that Chamberlain once soared on.
The Sixers also plan to display the court at the Wells Fargo Center, at the Sixers practice facility in Hershey, as well as the Basketball Hall Of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Aided by a surprising 20-9 start to the season, the 76ers ratings and attendance has been soaring through the roof, heading into the upcoming NBA All Star break. You can check out video of the historic purchase on the Sixers website.
In that magical game, Wilt Chamberlain shot 36-63 from the field and 28-32 from the free throw line. He had 25 rebounds, and even managed two assists. To put Chamberlain’s performance in perspective, NBA teams are averaging about 95 points per game during the current 2011-12 season.
