Jason Terry Nearing Deal with Milwaukee Bucks, Will Probably Play in the NBA Forever

Jason Terry
Raise your hand if you had the soon-to-be 39-year-old Jason Terry snagging a new contact before the 28-year-old Ty Lawson.

It seemed, at times, that the 17-year veteran guard would be forced to retire this summer. We’re now in late August, a return to the Houston Rockets was clearly out of the question, and rumors of his forthcoming whereabouts didn’t really exist.

Until now.

Terry is apparently nearing a deal to join the Milwaukee Bucks, according to ESPN.com’s Marc Stein:

The Milwaukee Bucks are in advanced discussions to sign veteran guard Jason Terry to bolster their backcourt and add leadership to a young roster, according to league sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Bucks are closing in on the signing of Terry, whom they’ve targeted to lend a much-needed dose of experience to their locker room after the 38-year-old spent the past two seasons with the Houston Rockets.

Signing Terry actually makes some semblance of sense for an upstart Bucks squad. They don’t have authentic veteran leadership beyond head coach Jason Kidd, and Terry, despite being ancient in NBA years, hasn’t shot under 35 percent from beyond the arc since 2003-04.

The Bucks need that kind of floor spacing and off-ball weaponry. They haven’t really done much to improve their shooting this summer. They signed Mirza Teletovic, giving them a legit stretch 4, but that’s it. Matthew Dellavedova replaced Jerryd Bayless, so the shooting there is a wash.

Terry represents an actual upgrade. Milwaukee might even use him as a rotation staple.

Plus, on the off chance the Bucks earn a surprise playoff bid again, like they did in 2014-15, Terry is a good guy to have in the locker room—a steadying presence who can impart postseason wisdom unto his younger running mates.
