Heat Guard Tyler Johnson Vomited When Brooklyn Nets Offered Him $50 Million

Tyler Johnson
How shocked was Tyler Johnson to learn that he would be earning $50 million over the next four years?

So shocked, he puked.

A couple of times.

Seriously.

From the South Florida Sun Sentinel‘s Ira Winderman:

So what was Tyler Johnson’s reaction when he heard he was going to receive a four-year, $50 million contract?

“I threw up a couple of times when I heard the number go out there. I was in shock. I even lost a little bit of weight, because just the anxiety of going through that whole process and not knowing where I was going to be,” the Miami Heat guard said Monday during a team-sponsored water-safety event at Bucky Dent Water Park.

This seems appropriate. Or maybe not. I don’t really know. No one has ever offered me $50 million to do anything for four years. Angry readers have offered me large sums of money in the past to jump off a cliff, presumably without a bungie cord or parachute, but I’ve never taken anyone up on that proposal. If offers climbed to around $50 million, though, I’d likely consider it.

Now, of course, I’m interested in knowing what Johnson’s reaction was when he found out he would be sticking with the Miami Heat. He doesn’t really touch on that feeling.

The Brooklyn Nets offered Johnson that four-year, $50 million contract. Though the Heat had the right to match, it seemed like the guard would become collateral damage of Dwyane Wade’s return. They could pay both, but would they want to? When Wade was on the books for, presumably, $20 million-plus per year?

Alas, Wade left, and matching Johnson became a no-brainer, even with the poison pill Brooklyn included for good measure. Johnson, per Basketball Insiders, will earn around $5.6 million in 2016-17 and $5.9 million in 2017-18, then his annual salary will skyrocket to more than $19.2 million in each of the final two seasons—at which point we can only assume he may vomit again.
