Already with one of the deepest rosters in the NBA, the Boston Celtics could be done wheeling and dealing this summer after signing Al Horford.
But they aren’t.
As team president Danny Ainge told reporters, per ESPN.com’s Chris Forsberg:
“I think we’re not done,” Ainge said while clutching his iPhone in one hand, seemingly waiting for the next call that might lead to a deal.
Ainge is often superficially aggressive. The Celtics are linked to just about everyone, but they rarely pull the trigger on anyone.
Still, they need to consolidate some of their mid-end weapons into another high-end performer. They also need to replace the defense and playmaking voids Evan Turner leaves behind as he joins the Portland Blazers.
Luckily for Ainge, the Celtics have all the assets to make this happen. The big-time free agents are all just about gone, but Boston has the picks and prospects to get in on the bidding for any superstar who should become available.
Keep your eye, then, on the Jimmy Butler rumor mill. The Celtics have been linked to him for months now, and no one quite knows what the Chicago Bulls are doing after signing Rajon Rondo and Dwyane Wade.
More likely than not, though, the Celtics won’t be making any huge splashes before the regular season. Minor moves—like them already guaranteeing the contracts of Amir Johnson and Jonas Jerebko—are bound to polish off their summer.
Blockbuster possibilities figure to become more realistic around the trade deadline.
