Jeff Hornacek and the Knicks have officially agreed to terms on a 3-year contract. Hornacek led the pool of candidates that also included David Blatt and Frank Vogel. But Phil Jackson decided on Hornacek. A guy who was run out of Phoenix after his team allegedly quit on him. That’s what makes this hire so interesting.
Derek Fisher barely lasted a year and a half in New York and he signed a 5 year deal. The Knicks currently are not an attractive free agent destination, so who knows when fortunes will turn around while Carmelo Anthony is young enough to still get buckets with regularity. All of that being said, you get the feeling that Hornacek won’t see the end of this 3 year pact.
Hornacek was fired as the Phoenix Suns’ coach in February, halfway through his third season on the job. Hornacek was 101-112 in two-plus seasons, which included a remarkable franchise turnaround in his first year. Hornacek won 48 games in 2013-14 before roster changes and injuries played a part in a 39-43 record in 2014-15. The Suns bottomed out to 14-35 in 2015-16, which led to Hornacek’s dismissal.
