Scott Skiles Steps Down as Magic Coach

Scott Skiles

According to Orlando Sentinel reporter Josh Robbins, Orlando Magic Head Coach Scott Skiles submitted his resignation and stepped down today after only one season under the helm.

This is a pretty shocking and unexpected move as the Magic took a nice step forward, winning 35 games in 2015-16, their most wins in a season since 2011-12.

Here is a statement from Skiles released on the Magic’s website:

“After much thought and careful consideration, I and I alone, have come to the conclusion that I am not the right head coach for this team,” said Skiles. “Therefore, effective immediately, I resign my position as head coach of the Orlando Magic. I realize this type of decision can cause much speculation. The reality though is in the first sentence. It is simple and true. Any other rumors are pure conjecture.

“I sincerely apologize for any unintended consequences that may adversely affect anyone associated with this decision,” Skiles continued. “The Magic are a world-class organization that employs world-class people. I wish them nothing but great success. I will always be thankful, especially to the DeVos family, for the opportunity.”

According to Sirius XM NBA radio host Justin Termine, there was a disconnect between Skiles and GM Rob Hennigan and they had a different vision for the structure of the roster and style of play for the team moving forward, Skiles also admitted his second thoughts about taking over the job in January to Hennigan’s dismay.

Magic guard, forward Evan Fournier was shocked by the resignation:

Excuse his French.

Skiles resignation means there is another, unexpected late job available in the NBA coaching carousel and a pretty attractive one at that.

If I were the Magic I would be knocking down Frank Vogel’s door immediately. He has a great defensive mind that could cultivate and get the most out of the extremely athletic and defensive minded roster the Magic possess.

It will interesting to see how this shakes up the rest of the NBA coaching searches in the next few weeks.
