Andre Drummond Open to Shooting Free Throws Underhand

The Detroit Pistons may very well max out Andre Drummond when he’s eligible, despite doing something worse than any other player in the history of the Association: shooting free throws.

This season, he shot a putrid 35% from the line, which is the lowest in league history for players who shot enough to qualify for this statistic. Along with others like DeAndre Jordan and Dwight Howard, this deficiency may ultimately be the reason Adam Silver and the League make a move to eradicate the “hack-a-bad-free-throw-shooter” rule that contributes towards making some game unwatchable.

But Andre Drummond is concerned with improving. According to his head coach Stan Van Gundy, Andre is open to shooting free throws underhand.

“As far as shooting underhand or anything else, it’s fair to say my discussion with Andre yesterday and the discussions Jeff and I have had and staff — everything is on the table,” Van Gundy said Thursday during the season wrap-up at The Palace.

“It won’t be a unilateral decision; we’ll do some research on some things and come up with what we think is a good approach, talk to Andre and see what he thinks and develop an approach going forward.

“We all know it’s an important thing — Andre more than any of us – he’s pretty open to anything. There’s a lot of ways to attack this problem and we’ll all have a hand in it.”
