Report: Dwight Howard Prefers Being Traded to Atlanta Hawks

Dwight Howard
Are the Houston Rockets actively shopping Dwight Howard? And if so, will they actually move him?

We honestly have no idea. Conflicting reports abound. But if the Rockets do move him, Howard apparently has a preference. As ESPN.com’s Chris Broussard said while making an appearance on Mike & Mike (h/t HoopsHype):

“I’m told he would like to get to Atlanta.”

“Even last last year his representation talked to the Hawks about ‘Hey, it may be not working out in Houston… What do you guys think?’ He’s from Atlanta. He needs some love.”

Howard’s interest in Atlanta is reasonable. The Hawks’ interest in him would be weird. I mean, it probably doesn’t even exist.

The Hawks deploy a passing-packed offense similar to what the San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors run. They pride themselves on versatility, and Howard, at this stage of his career, is no chameleon. He can still wreak havoc within pick-and-rolls and protect the rim, but he doesn’t keep the ball moving and his inefficient post-ups take up valuable time and possessions.

Atlanta also has the expiring contract of Al Horford on its books. If the Hawks are interested in throwing a nine-figure deal at anyone this summer, they should turn to the more well-rounded Horford. He doesn’t have the same defensive reputation as Howard, but he is a better passer, shooter, scorer and just generally easier to integrate.

Again, Dwight Howard’s interest in Atlanta may be real, even if exaggerated or slightly fabricated. But it would be truly shocking if his purported infatuation was reciprocated.
