Brandon Jennings may be a starting point guard again soon enough.
According to Chris Sheridan of Sheridan Hoops (h/t ProBasketballTalk), the Brooklyn Nets and Detroit Pistons are talking about a Thaddeus Young-for-Brandon Jennings swap:
Brandon Jennings could very well end up in Brooklyn two weeks from now in a trade that would send Thaddeus Young to the Detroit Pistons, sources tell SheridanHoops.com.
There are several teams looking to acquire Jennings, who has been a starter most of his career but is currently stuck behind Reggie Jackson on Detroit’s depth chart. He will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
Brooklyn is one of the teams with the biggest need at point guard after losing Jarrett Jack for the season to a knee injury. The Nets are willing to give Jennings a long-term contract as they begin the process of rebuilding following the reign of error directed by Billy King.
This is, legitimately, confusing.
The Nets do need a point guard, and Jennings, when healthy and sporting a reserved shot selection, is starter’s material. But he’s only a few months into his return from an Achilles injury. It’s bizarre that the Nets would already view the 26-year-old, who is on an expiring deal, as a long-term building block.
It’s likewise risky to flip Young, who is your second-best player behind Brook Lopez, for a relative question mark like Jennings. At least you know Young is healthy.
If this is the Nets trying to make a salary dump and get out of the final three years of Young’s contract, it makes a bit more sense. Even then, Young should still be worth more than expiring fodder. At the same time, though, Young doesn’t really fit what the Pistons are doing. He can play either small forward or power forward, but the Pistons need someone who can stroke threes, and Young is a lifetime 32 percent shooter from beyond the arc.
Which makes this all very, very confusing.
What say you, Stan Van Gundy?
#Pistons SVG calls Brandon Jennings for #Nets Thaddeus Young trade report "made-up shit."
