It has been quite the week in the NBA Developmental League, better known simply as the D-League.
Oft times an afterthought to the average NBA fan, many players have properly used the D-League as a vehicle to further develop their games, hone their skills, and eventually make an NBA roster like Phoenix’ Gerald Green, Houston’s Jeremy Lin, and OKC’s Reggie Jackson.
Last week, former Louisville standout and NBA veteran Terrence Williams scored a then season high 50 points in a game then was promptly upstaged the following night by Kevin Murphy who dropped an impressive 51 points in a game.
Then on Monday night, the NBA D-League’s all time single game scoring mark went down as this season’s leading scorer, Idaho Stampede PG Pierre Jackson, scored an incredible 58 points, breaking the old mark of 53 points scored by Morris Almond (’08) and Will Conroy (’09).
Jackson, a former 2 year standout at Baylor, helping the Bears reach the Elite 8 in 2012 and win the NIT Championship in 2013, is a 2nd round draft pick of the New Orleans Pelicans but has yet to receive a big league call-up despite leading the D-League in scoring(30.2 ppg plus 6.2 ast), topping the 40 point plateau 6 times this season, and earning a 2014 D-League All Star spot.
As for the record setting game Monday night, the 5’11 Jackson torched the Texas Legends, the Dallas Mavericks’ D-League affiliate, on 24-33 shooting from the field, including 7-13 from behind the arc and dropping 27 points in the 4th quarter alone.
He even had a Tracy McGrady moment, scoring an impressive 12 points over a 2 minute stretch of action.
Maybe with All Star PG Jrue Holiday out for an extended period of time, the Pelicans should give a serious look to Pierre Jackson over the 2nd half of the NBA season….
