And the feelgood hoops story of the year has to go to Lt. Cotina Sellers-Jenkins, who decided to give the ultimate surprise to her 13 year old son Derrick Jenkins just after Christmas.
It was a rough holiday season for little Derrick as he hadn’t seen his mother for approximately 8 months as she was deployed early in 2013 to Kuwait as the squadron commander of the 386 Force Support Squadron.
Derrick is a budding hoops star for Legacy Middle School in San Antonio, Texas, which became the perfect backdrop to pull of the ultimate surprise reunion of mother and son.
With military precision planning, both coaches, as well as referees went all in on a bogus technical foul that put Derrick all alone at the free throw line.
Little did he know that his mom had just returned home and was waiting just outside the gym, waiting for the plan to unfold.
After attempting and missing the 2nd free throw, the hair on Derrick’s neck had to be standing up as his mother had snuck into the gym and up behind him and ever so quietly whispered, “Oh, that’s alright Derrick.”
Derrick’s reaction was priceless as he collapsed to the near wall, with tears in his eyes, before making the reunion complete with a hug from mom…………..
