When thinking of Real Madrid from Spain, our minds traditionally go toward the highly successful and wildly popular and prestigious soccer club that is annually among the World’s best.
But they also are a very accomplished basketball club in Europe that has won numerous European Cups and has featured several future NBA stars in years past like Arvydas Sabonis, Serge Ibaka, Rudy Fernandez, and most recently Detroit Pistons forward Kyle Singler, who played a season in Europe after a standout career at Duke.
Just last season, Real Madrid was a Euroleague Finalist and won the Spanish ACB League, widely regarded as one of the best worldwide hoops league outside of the NBA.
With both the NCAA and NBA season’s just getting under way, we sometimes forget about their European cousins, who also feature a high level of hoops action.
Take for instance, this unbelievable buzzer beating shot by Real Madrid’s Felipe Reyes. On the surface, it appears as if it’s just another run of the mill last second shot, which are a dime a dozen at times in the states.
But when watching the video, what occurs may be one of the most spectacular last second shots ever, as Reyes grabs a 3/4 court pass before it bounces out of bounds and casually heaves and sinks a miraculous buzzer beater, with his back to the basket.
It reminds me a bit of a recent blooper play by University of Kentucky freshman James Young, who saved the ball into the wrong basket, except Reyes’ shot actually goes in the correct basket…..
