To even the most casual hoops fan, one better get used to hearing the name Andrew Wiggins as he has been touted as the best high school player since Lebron James.
Before playing a single minute of college basketball, the 6’9 small forward has already been named a 1st Team Preseason NCAA All American and has been projected as the top pick in next year’s 2014 NBA Draft.
As a result, the multi-talented and super athletic Wiggins will probably only play on the collegiate level for the required one season, before heading to the NBA, where upwards of 10 NBA Teams are already in tank mode to secure the services of the Canadian born future superstar.
So, needless to say, everything Andrew Wiggins says and does this season will be headline news. Starting with his inaugural appearance at Kansas’ annual tip-off to the basketball season, aptly called Late Night At the Phog, in honor of their legendary coach Phog Allen.
It is the Jayhawks’ version of Midnight Madness, that will begin for most other teams this coming Friday live on ESPN. It usually includes player introductions, coaches and players participating in hilarious skits, as well as the team’s first official scrimmage, with fans and students getting their first to catch a glimpse of players like Wiggins, Wayne Selden, and Perry Ellis prior to the season.
Prior to the scrimmage, the events began with coach Bill Self, playing the role of Ron Burgundy from the movie Anchorman, amping up the crown by proclaiming, “It’s time to hang one more banner at the Phog”, referencing just how talented this Jayhawks squad could be this season.
That was immediately followed by the flashbulb popping, ear drum shattering first time introduction of freshman Andrew Wiggins, that now rivals that once magical intro of John Wall at Kentucky back in 2009…..
But before actual basketball could begin, Wiggins and several of his teammates showed off their dance moves to Justin Timberlake’s “Suit and Tie”. Let’s just say Andrew should keep his day job………
By the time the actual scrimmage came along, Wiggins didn’t disappoint, scoring 12 points, including multiple highlight reel jams, leading his squad to victory, taking dunking during a scrimmage to a whole new level………
