A few nights ago, Brittney Griner’s collegiate basketball career ended prematurely when Louisville topped Baylor in the Sweet 16. Griner will now go on to a professional basketball career in the WNBA. But how about the NBA?
Mark Cuban has recently stated that he would take a shot on Griner and actually draft her. Personally, I’ll chalk this up to Cuban being Cuban, and a guy who is never afraid to give a good quote to get people going.
Even if Griner were allowed to play in the NBA, she would absolutely get destroyed. At her height, she would have to guard scoring swingmen, like the Kobe’s, LeBron’s and Joe Johnson’s of the world and her feet simply aren’t quick enough. Why are we even having this conversation?
“If she is the best on the board, I will take her,” Cuban said before the Mavs’ Tuesday night game against the Los Angeles Lakers. “I’ve thought about it. I’ve thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I’d lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it’s not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it.”

“She’d still have to make the team,” Cuban said. “I’m not going to carry her just to carry her. I don’t think, anyways. But I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to giving her the opportunity.”
Cuban acknowledged that Griner playing in the NBA’s Las Vegas summer league would have tremendous marketing potential.
