Marc Gasol Named Defensive Player of the Year

It remains to be seen how the Memphis Grizzlies will fair in the playoffs for the first time since trading away Rudy Gay. They’re down 0-1 to the Clippers but it’s a long series. What has been so successful for them all season long has been the interior with Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol. They may a great 1-2 frontcourt punch.

Today, Gasol was honored by being named defensive player of the year. Let’s see if he can stop DeAndre Jordan and Blake Griffin down low to get the Grizz to the second round.

The Memphis Grizzlies are one of the best defensive teams in basketball. And the man in the middle of it, literally, is Marc Gasol.

According to Chris Vernon, Gasol will be named the 2012-13 Defensive Player of the Year.

Gasol, in terms of traditional stats, doesn’t necessarily impress. He averaged just 1.7 blocks, 1.3 a game behind league leader Serge Ibaka. Gasol pulled in 7.8 rebounds a game, almost five a game fewer than Dwight Howard, the league leader.
