It wasn’t as much of a sure thing as Lebron James getting the MVP award again this year, but Knicks’ JR Smith getting the 6th man of the year award is not a shock of any kind. Smith was the Knicks’ second leading scorer behind Carmelo Anthony, and he did it coming off the bench. The official news of his award is set for this afternoon at a press conference, but rumors have been confirmed that he is in fact the recipient.
The Knicks have called an afternoon news conference at which Smith will be given the award, the source said. The news was previously reported by The Associated Press.
The eighth-year guard has averaged 18.1 points in 80 games, all off the bench. He had 29 games in which he scored 20 points as a reserve, tying him with the Clippers’ Jamal Crawford for the NBA lead. (via Balltribe via ESPN)
Smith has always been questioned for his shot selection and maturity wherever he has played. However this year in New York he has played within himself, while still making some ridiculous highlight reel shots and dunks to keep the crowd entertained. And one thing you can’t question about Smith is his hustle. The guy doesn’t just fill passing lanes, he plays great perimeter defense which has helped the Knicks turn into one of the better defensive teams in the East.
Although many coaches have looked at Smith as a headache, defensive minded Knicks coach Mike Woodson recognized Smith’s defensive potential where most coaches can’t look past his offensive potential.
Congrats Earl Smith III! Now its time to get that CHIP, right?
