Nuggets’ George Karl Wants to Abandom Conferences In Playoff Format

The Denver Nuggets Head Coach, George Karl, has been good for one soundbite after another for years. The guy is great in an interview. He’s certainly not afraid to say what’s on his mind. And when recently asked about his thoughts on the current NBA playoff format of the top 8 teams per conference, with a home court advantage for the division winners, he gave a somewhat surprising answer. Even for George Karl. How about abandoning conferences all together?

So he was asked: Do you think you should wipe out divisions and just have conference standings?

“I’m even crazier than that,” the Nuggets’ coach said.

Oh, yeah? What ya got?

“I think you should put all top-16 and do it that way, and then reseed for the next round,” he said.

So basically, here’s Karl’s idea: The top eight teams from the Western Conference and the top eight teams from the Eastern Conference are put into a playoff pool. At this point, conference affiliation no longer matters. Instead, it’s all about record.

So what do you think? Is Karl just an old school coach off his rocker? Or is there merit to his idea?
