In NBA circles, the recent trend has been stockpiling star players to form several units of superteams like the Miami Heat adding future Hall of famer Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis to the already potent core of Lebron, Wade, and Bosh, forming the Miami Big 5.
Then yesterday, the LA Lakers had their media day showing off their newest additions in the form of PG Steve Nash and center Dwight Howard which should greatly ease the burden of Kobe, Pau, and World Peace for next season. Check out the West Coast’s version of the Big 5.
In the College game, the University of Kentucky head coach John Calipari is no stranger to putting together all star combinations on the hardwood even if most are still underclassmen. After winning the 2012 NCAA National Championship behind a potent starting line-up featuring 3 freshmen and 2 sophomores, next season’s Wildcats will have a decidedly different look with the entire starting 5 from last season now in the NBA.
In place of the departed Davis, Gilchrist, Teague, Miller, and Jones are a plethora of new faces led by elite freshmen Nerlens Noel, PG Archie Goodwin, SF Alex Poythress, C Willie Cauley-Stein, and transfers PG Ryan Harrow and SG Julius Mayes, along with holdover super sophomore Kyle Wiltjers.
Even with upwards of 6 new key contributors, the Wildcats should be a consensus Top 5 preseason pick heading into next season.
