There has been a lot of speculation about whether or not Brandon Roy would make an NBA comeback if he got healthy. Considering how young he was when he retired due to ongoing injury, it has only fueled speculation that if healthy he would once again play in the NBA.
Well this weekend that speculation became a more serious possibility as Roy himself said through his friend Will Conroy’s twitter account that he’s been training daily and plans to make a comeback to the league as soon as next season:
“Lord willing, I will play again soon,” Roy wrote in a series of tweets. “Yes, I’m preparing for a comeback. I’m training daily. I’m preparing for a return next year. I appreciate the love. Hopefully I’ll be back on the floor soon. Health is good.”
Most Portland Blazers’ fans on first hearing the news were jumping for joy. Until a sober second thought set in and they realized that if Roy makes a comeback to the NBA before 2014, he won’t be able to sign with the Blazers. Why? Because the team used their amnesty provision in the CBA to remove Roy’s salary from the team’s books. That makes him ineligible to play for them. When asked about whether or not he wanted to play for the Blazers:
“I wish, but due to the NBA rules I cannot play in Portland until 2014-2015,” Roy tweeted. “I’m looking to return sooner. Thanks for your support. I’m fortunate to have played for such a great fan base. No matter where I play, Portland will always have a special place in my heart.”
Personally, I hope to see ‘The Natural’ back on the floor next season. Knowing he can’t play for the Blazers, where would you like to see Roy sign this summer?
