Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt has been diagnosed with early onset dementia, an Alzheimer’s type disease, but will try to coach the Lady Vols this season.
An announcement is expected Tuesday, the report said. Former players have been called, and many are expected to be alongside Summitt during for the announcement.
“There’s not going to be any pity party and I’ll make sure of that,” Summitt told the Knoxville News Sentinel.
Summitt, 59, said she had not felt well for months, often times showing erratic behavior, before finally deciding to go to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for tests in May.
Despite the shocking news, Summitt plans to continue coaching. She told the News Sentinel she has a plan of medication and increased mental and physical activities designed to stimulate the mind, such as doing puzzles and reading before going to sleep.
