Carmelo Anthony played one year of college basketball at Syracuse University, and that was back during the 2002-03 season. However, it was a very productive year as he led the Orange to their only National Championship under Jim Boeheim. In fact, Boeheim calls him the most talented player he’s ever coached. The school has finally decided to honor what Anthony did for the program.
Carmelo Anthony will have his college jersey retired at the Carrier Dome in February, Syracuse confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com.
Anthony, who led Syracuse to the 2003 national championship as a freshman, will be honored at halftime during one of the Orange’s four home games next month. The specific date will be officially announced next week.
Anthony’s jersey hanging from the rafters will be unveiled during the ceremony. He also will be handed a special large-framed plaque with his No. 15 jersey, which has not been worn since his first and only season on campus. Then, he will be given the opportunity to address the home crowd.
