Mavericks To Sign Derek Fisher

The Dallas Mavericks get set to add 38-year old Derek Fisher to their roster. The one time Laker has been out of the league to start the season, but it looks like he’ll be suiting up for head coach Rick Carlisle.

“I think his leadership will help,” Collison said of Fisher. “He’s a veteran guy that’s been around the NBA for a very, very long time.

“I think he’s going to help me grow into the player I want to be, and he’s going to help this team grow.”

Collison has been sidelined as of late with a sprained finger. With that being said, it seems like he-and the Mavs’ PG’s in general- is taking the brunt of blame for how the Mavericks are faring on the offensive end.

That’s a little strange, considering the raw numbers generated by the Mavs’ offense so far this year.

Though they stand at a substandard 7-9, Dallas has been staying close in games in large part due to their offensive output. They score 99.2 points per game (good for 9th in the league, aka top 10).

To lend some credence to the dismay of the Dallas higher-ups, there are some concerns. The Dallas Mavericks have been turning the ball over on 13.6% of their possessions. Opposing teams are shooting an effective field goal percentage (adjusted for the increased value of a three-pointer) of just under 49% against the Mavericks.

Perhaps the thinking here is that the defensive efforts should start in the back court. In that regard, acquiring a cagey Fisher makes a lot of sense.

Frankly, as soon as the NBA announced that there would fines for flopping, I was praying Fisher would be back in an NBA uniform soon.
