Lamar Odom Having Conditioning Issues

Once again, Lamar Odom is facing criticism concerning his conditioning.

Odom came into Clippers camp looking like he’d gained a noticeable amount of weight, and not in muscle. In an exhibition game against the Utah Jazz, which the clippers won 96-94, Odom was given a rest along with fellow newcomer Grant Hill.

“He’s got to work through some conditioning things and some health things right now, which he’s doing,” Del Negro said. “Yeah, I wish he was in a little bit better conditioning, and he wishes he was. But he’s just got to continue to work every day and I’m sure he’ll get there eventually.”

Odom’s conditioning problem is particularly key due to another challenge he faces.

The returning Clipper is knee troubles. With his weight going up over the summer, it is safe to assume that to be the reason for his knee problems. In the same sense, Odom’s efforts to lose weight become more prevalent in avoiding further knee complications. This is a legitimate 6’10” forward who often handles the ball and initiates an offense.

With that much involvement in an offense, Odom’s weight can become a serious burden on his knees, further complicating the problem.

With Odom’s less than productive season with the Mavericks last year-posting career lows in points, rebounds, and assists-Odom is getting a good chance at rediscovering his game. Barring any surprise setback, he should be back to game shape within a week or two into the regular season.

The Clippers sure wouldn’t mind the help, as they look to improve on an impressive run to Western semi’s last season.
