  Even though the players won’t officially hear their names called until the 2012 NBA Draft begins on June 28th, it’s a foregone conclusion that last season’s NCAA POY Anthony Davis will be selected with the top overall pick by the New Orleans Hornets.  I mean, he’s already been spotted wearing a Hornets hat just prior to the Lottery and has appeared on the cover of a well known hoops magazine donning a Hornets jersey.

  Unlike some previous years, there is no speculation between either Greg Oden or Kevin Durant and John Wall or Evan Turner in this Draft, as Davis has distanced himself from the field by setting numerous school, SEC, and NCAA records for blocked shots in helping the Wildcats to win the 2012 NCAA National Championship.

  After being forced to trade former franchise player Chris Paul at midseason or risk losing him to eventual free agency, the Hornets now can rebuild around Davis, current NBA star Eric Gordon, and another quality piece with the #10 pick.  Along with securing the top pick, the Hornets will have a new owner, Saints Tom Benson, helping to lead the Hornets into a new era.

  A player as great as Davis and as charismatic deserves an awesome nickname.  Let’s help the Hornets’ fanbase come up with a few nicknames to call Anthony Davis……

  This one is as simple as it gets.  The #23 is associated with one player….Michael Jordan.  Hailing from Chicago, Anthony Davis chose to honor The G.O.A.T by wearing MJ’s famous #23 on his own jersey while at Kentucky.  One might be surprised to learn the many similarities between Davis and Jordan as both were former McDonald’s All Americans, both won National Championships, and both won NCAA POY Awards.  Also, in keeping with the theme of Chris Paul being called CP3, Anthony Davis as AD23 sounds similar.

  During Hurrican Katrina, the now infamous levees failed to protect New Orleans from the flood waters surging into the downtown area, causing widespread disaster.  Immediately after the floods subsided, it was discovered that the levees built to protect the city were substandard.  Similar to real life, the Hornets are bringing in a new levee system to protect the rims at New Orleans Arena in the form of Anthony Davis.  Davis guarded the rim better than anyone in college basketball last season, in historic fashion, blocking more than 4.6 shots per game.  Hopefully this levee won’t be as porous as the real ones on the Mississippi Delta.

  Sticking with the dominating defensive theme, Davis should be an immediate success on the defensive side of the ball from Game 1.  While many think his offensive skills will one day equal his defensive prowess, negating opposing players’ shots will be his bread and butter from the get-go.  I can hear Jeff Van Gundy, during Anthony Davis’ first national game on ESPN, screaming “Nawlins Negator” as Davis swats Lebron James’ shot into the 10th row.

  Everyone knows that New Orleans is known as the Crescent City.  One of it’s biggest spans or bridges is the Crescent City Connection, joining the downtown area in the East with the suburban areas to the West, spanning over the mighty Mississippi River.  As far as prospects go, no player in this year’s Draft has a longer wingspan than that of Anthony Davis, which reportedly stretches as far as 7’5 inches wide.

  The two things that Anthony Davis does well is swat shots and dunk the basketball.  He shot nearly 70% from the floor, mostly because he dunked everything within the vicinity of the rim, setting the nets on fire.  Speeking of fire, one thing regulary associated with New Orleans and Mardis Gras are those trademark lit torches carried around at night during parades and carnivals called the flambeaux.  So why not call Anthony the Dunking Flambeaux….

  The true definition of a bayou is a weblike, slow moving body or stream of water found in low lying areas, just like in southern Louisiana.  Anthony Davis is almost weblike in protecting the painted area, whether it’s swatting shots, clearing the glass, or taking a charge.  Once he starts racking up monterous blocked shot numbers, it wouldn’t surprise me to hear AD being called the “Bayou Block Party.”

  When speaking in terms of something cajun, it doens’t just pretain to food, but is a way of life.  After playing his college ball at the legendary University of Kentucky, Davis will forever be a Wildcat.  As Anthony arrives in NOLA and slowly integrates himself into the cajun culture, why not consider calling AD the “Cajun Kat?”

  Similar to the “Cajun Kat”, referring to Davis as the Creole Kid would mean tapping into the ancestors of the region who were decendents of the French and Spanish settlers that founded New Orleans back in the early 1700′s.  Davis just turned 19 years of age, so calling him a kid kinda goes without saying…..

  By know, besides his top notch basketball skills, Anthony Davis is known for one physical trait that makes him stand out from his peers……….his ever stylish uni-brow.  It has been mocked, it has been cheered, some fanatical Kentucky fan even shaved the unibrow into his chesthair in support of Davis.  Why not combine the unibrow with the hornet, to formulate the Uni-Bee…..
