Rubio Talks Trash to Kobe About Olympics

Following the Lakers game in Minnesota against the Timberwolves this week, Ricky Rubio made his way to the Lakers exit from the arena to chat it up with his countryman Pau Gasol. The ensuing trash talking about the Olympics between Kobe Bryant and rookie Ricky Rubio was entertaining…

Bryant: “You talking about London?”

Gasol: “Oh yeah.”

Rubio: “You’re gonna be there?”

Bryant: “Yeah.”

Rubio: “You know you’re getting the silver medal. You know that.”

Bryant: “Shiiiiiiit! I’m taking bets. If I win, I get the keys of Barcelona.”

Rubio: “I bet what you want.”

Bryant: “I’ll take it!”

Orlando Magic Can’t Find Hotel Rooms in Indiana Because of Super Bowl

This is one of the funniest stories we’ve come across in quite some time. At least we can chuckle at it. Can you imagine the octave that Stan Van Gundy’s voice reached once he found out this information?

A lack of available hotel rooms in the Indianapolis area has forced the Magic to fly to Cincinnati after their home game against Cleveland on Friday.

The Magic will do some kind of walk-through at their hotel Saturday, then fly to Indianapolis for the game that night against the Indiana Pacers at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

“When you come out with the schedule in December and have a game in the Super Bowl city, lodging might be a problem,” he said.

Kendrick Perkins Defends Westbrook at Rose’s Expense

As long as he plays with Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook will get criticized for scoring too much. But according to Kendrick Perkins, Derrick Rose is also a scoring PG but he doesn’t seem to receive the same heat. Gotta respect Perk for sticking up for this guy.

“He always gets this label of being selfish,” Perkins said. “He’s not that at all. The one thing about Russ is he’s a scoring point guard, and that’s what we need him to be. That’s why this team has been successful because he does what he does.

“The thing that bothers me … is Derrick Rose is not a true point guard, he is a scoring point guard, but nobody gets on Derrick Rose like they get on Russ.”

Can Rubio Propel the T-Wolves to a Playoff Appearance?

January 31, 2012 – Dan Favale

Some like to think to that the center position is the most important one in the league. Those people are misguided, as now more than ever, the imperativeness of boasting a competent point guard has never been more evident.

Look at the New York Knicks. Look at the Los Angeles Lakers. Hell, look at the Orlando Magic, a team with the league’s best center and a faltering point guard. Each of these teams are struggle to scrape a victory.

Now take a look at the Houston Rockets. Then take a look at the Atlanta Hawks. And then feast your eyes on the Minnesota Timberwolves. Each of these teams has thrived thanks to the emergence of a point guard, most notably Minnesota and their Spanish hero Ricky Rubio.

How good is Rubio? Coming into the season, he generated a lot of hype for a kid who struggled to average six points and a handful of assists per game overseas. Twenty-0ne games into his rookie season though, critics and doubters are left paralyzed.

Rubio is averaging an impressive 11.1 points, 8.8 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game. More impressive than his stats though, is the effect he has on the entire team. Kevin Love has never looked better, Derrick Williams is coming along nicely and Darko Milicic no longer looks completely incapable, which is no easy feat. Most recently, he helped Michael Beasley break out of his offensive rut, which again, is easier said than done.

At only 21, the savvy point guard has exhibited an awareness of a seasoned veteran. His passes are Steve Nash crisp and his effortless penetration emulates Rajon Rondo.

Love made the Timberwolves bearable to watch again, but Rubio has made them relevant. The team is one game below .500 and only two games back of the eighth and final playoff spot for the Western Conference. It’s still early, but at the same time it isn’t. In just 10 games, the campaign will be nearing its halfway mark, and amidst a condensed schedule, every game counts.

Wins against the surging Rockets are not to be taken lightly. Rubio helped the Timberwolves manhandle a playoff team on its own court. Minnesota has yet to show it can dell out such a romping on a nightly basis, but they are now, for the first time since Kevin Garnett, a threat to win on any given night, against any given team.

Will Rubio lead the Timberwolves to a playoff appearance this spring? While it’s going to be tough for Minnesota to distinguish itself from a deep Western Conference, it’s far from out of the question. The shortened season has opened the door for unproven teams to take center stage; it has created an opportunity for the unexpected to become a reality.

And as long as Rubio is at the helm, anything is possible for these Timberwolves.

Dwight Open to Playing for the Chicago Bulls

Can you think of a player who has handled his pending free agency worse than Dwight Howard has? The way he’s so blatantly flaunting the fact that wants out of Orlando would make LeBron James blush.

Approached Friday night in New Orleans after a 26-point loss to the Hornets, Howard shared his thoughts on a long-shot trade to the Bulls. ‘If I could play with Derrick right now and God wanted that to happen, it will happen,’ Howard said. ‘It has nothing to do with me not wanting to play with Derrick Rose. I love him. That’s my brother.’ Howard disputed the notion that marketing issues factored into his leaving the Bulls off his initial trade wish list. Both Howard and Rose have contracts with Adidas, and some believe the company doesn’t want two signature players on the same team. ‘It has nothing to do with Adidas,’ Howard said. ‘In fact, Adidas would love that because me and Derrick have the same guy.’

Nike Air Flight One – ‘Glow in the Dark’

January 31, 2012 – Ben Berry

As with the last few NBA All-Star Weekends the sneakers released have a theme that varies between companies. Since this ’11 – ’12 season has more eyes on the league than in recent memory, Nike goes for the flashy by releasing their biggest signature sneakers in glow in the dark colorways. With this year’s event being held in Orlando, what better way to celebrate than to take a sneaker made popular by one of the best Magic players and give it the GITD treatment?

The Air Flight One made my list of Penny Hardaway’s top 10 sneakers and is set to return in a big way this year. Not much is known about where these will drop but since this will be a Quickstrike release and will likely fall on during All-Star Weekend don’t be surprised if they are limited to stores in the Orlando area.

Also scheduled to drop around the same time is the original ‘Orlando’ Air Flight One; something our avid readers have known about since November.

THD Video: NBA Highlights of January 2012

After the extended lockout robbed us of the first chunk of the 2011-12 NBA season, January 2012 was the first full month of NBA action. And what a month it was. We couldn’t have asked for anything better in an opening month.

With multiple ‘must see’ games each night, January was packed with highlight reel plays, and nail biting finishes. Re-live the highlights with The Hoop Doctors weekly highlight mixtape, this week focusing on the month that was…

Video: Blake Griffin Posterizes Perkins

Blake Griffin’s greatest dunk of his career wasn’t even up for debate before tonight. And trust me, there have been plenty of highlight reel plays to choose from. It was last season when he posterized Timofey Mozgov when he played for the Knicks with the ‘superman dunk’.

I’m sorry to say but Griffin has actually one-upped his own dunk from last season tonight. He took off and rose up over the big center Kendick Perkins of the OKC Thunder, and threw it down through the rim from eye level. Simply disgusting Griff. Definitely the dunk of the year, and dare I say possibly the greatest dunk of all-time?…

Blake Griffin Posterizes Kendrick Perkins

Slow-Motion View

There were plenty of quick reactions we saw on twitter, but this reaction by Lebron James gives you an idea of what Griffin’s colleagues think of his high flying act. Lebron is referring to his dunk earlier this week where he jumped clear over John Lucas and people had said it was the dunk of the year. Sorry Lebron, not anymore.
