    There should be NO contest who is the greater among the 2, Jordan is unquestionably superior than kobe in all aspects and achievements. We just live in a generation where the 18-25 y/o in their active minds are comparing the two because they obviously don’t know Jordan’s achievements during his time, which our new generation sadly missed.

    I am so glad and blessed to have beheld his greatness, his story is singular.

    First of all folks, let me say that in my opinion this shouldn’t even be needed if you watched Michael Jordan’s career and have seen Kobe’s so far. Jordan was by far more consistently dominant and effective, that it’s really a true insult that this is needed. Thank the media and certain Kobe fans for this breakdown though, I hope you enjoy, this took a lot of time….

      First Kobe is not going to win on the STAT department against Jordan. One of the reasons why Jordan had those kind of stats is because there wasn’t many good guards at his position, there wasn’t that many good players in the 90′s compared to this era, the people that guarded Jordan were mostly all short or they weren’t that good ! ( Starks,Ehlo,Hornacek,Russel,Wilkens,Marjele,) Just to name a few.
      When it comes down to it, Everyone is going to have their own opinion on who is better. When it comes to Jordan fans, they’re going to compare Stats or who has more rings or MVP’s….I say this, Kobe is more of a complete player than MJ. Kobe is a better ball handler, Way better shooter than MJ. If you watch videos on MJ on youtube, he don’t shoot the ball deep like kobe does! If you compare videos with MJ and Kobe. Mostly what MJ does is layups and dunks. There is some shots here and there but not as deep as Kobe. Also not as exciting !

        There weren’t as many good guards but the defensive rules such as hand checking that got changed after the 90′s allowed defenders to be much more physical than they could be now. Also there wasn’t a defensive 3 second rule so big men just camped in the lane making it harder to drive. So even if the players weren’t as “good” the rules definitely played against jordan.

        There was also a new rule in the league now a days that Jordan didn’t have, and this rule protects guards from getting hit and hand checked when they drove into the lane. A lot of ESPN analysists try to speculate how much more Jordan could have scored per game. And Jordan’s players were better? Are we comparing Luc Longley to Pau Gasol or Tony Kucok to Lamar Odom? The ‘Hall of Famer’ many fans seem to look at for the Bulls is Pippen. But if you look at Pippen’s stats he only averaged 16 points and 6 rebounds a game, those are not Hall of Fame stats, the only reason he is in the hall of fame is because Jordan attracted so much attention and double teams that it made it that much easier for Pippen. I have a lot of trouble saying Kobe is better than Jordan buddy… Jordan averaged shooting over 50% on the bulls while Kobe has yet to do this once.. While Kobe is an amazing player and he is the Michael Jordan of today’s era.. he is still no where near the player MJ was, and believe me, there is a lot more proof for MJ than there is for Kobe.

      @RTG, Kobe has been dealing with nagging injuries his whole career, and gets fouled on just about every shot he takes. Kobe is a more skilled player than MJ, but MJ has more talent. Jumping ability and massive mitts made MJ so good at finishing around the rim and ball handling (Kobe has tiny little hands). But Kobe’s ability to pivot is his greatest advantage over MJ. And comparing numbers doesn’t do anything for this argument. I doubt MJ would have been completely dominating the league if he could just throw it down low to shaq every time for an easy 33 points a game..

        @KB24, You mention Kobe gets fouled on every shot? You realize that the league is now focused more on letting offense go. MJ was mugged almost every time he got the ball and in his time they weren’t fouls. If some of the guys who covered MJ were playing now, they would foul out in 6 possessions. There are people who say if Jordan played now, he would have scored 100 points multiple times. Kobe is the best player of his era, but doesn’t compare to Jordan. Heck, I don’t know if Kobe is as good as Magic Johnson who played at the same time as Jordan.

I give him credit on the three point shots but when it comes to clutch and true percentages, jordan wins out. He set the bar for the whole world of basketball.       fact is, kobe had more competition for mvp awards on his own team, much less the league. use stats that actually relate to today’s game. because by that standard, lebron should get some nods as the greatest and he just isnt. he could be, but he will never be.

      wilt scored 100 and regularly had over 20 rebounds, it wasnt odd to see him go over 30 rebounds. he was also the first globe trotter to have his number retired, that was after only 1 season with the team. jordan wouldnt have even made that team, and the closest he ever got to 100 was 63. kobe could have possibly made the globe trotters because he has every skill (range, paint, athleticism, defense), and he scored 81, thats 18 points closer than jordan got. actually closer than any other player.

    Its is also worth knowing that during Jordan’s declining years of 40-41 he still averaged 21.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 0.5 blocks and 1.5 steals per game while starting for his team only 60 plus times during the season. Compare this to kobe’s CAREER AVERAGE of 25.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.6 assist 0.5 blocks and 1.5 steals and you will realize that Jordan’s skills during his declining years are still at par with kobe’s skills in his primal years.

    Many people on this blog have used stats as a way to prove Michael Jordan is better than Kobe Bryant. The biggest mistake in comparing them that way is that you are comparing a man who came in the league at 21 to a kid who came in the league at 18. It is not fair to Kobe at all. Do not count Kobe’s career stats when he was 18 and 19 years old and coming off the bench and his stats are almost identical to Michael’s stats. I went and did the math.

    Kobe career stats(excluding 1996-1998 when he was 18,19)
    fg% 46%
    ft% 84%
    3p% 34%
    rebounds per game 5.8
    assists per game 5.2
    steals per game 1.7
    blocks per game 0.6
    points per game 27.6

    Jordan career stats
    fg% 50%
    ft% 84%
    3p% 33%
    rebounds per game 6.2
    assists per game 5.3
    steals per game 2.4
    blocks per game 0.8
    points per game 30.1

    The only significant difference is field goal percentage. Then you consider that Kobe takes more 3 point shoots than Michael did and that in itself lowers Kobe’s field goal percentage some. To me both Kobe’s and Michael’s stats are pretty much neck and neck.

    BUT WHAT MAKES KOBE BETTER THAN MICHAEL

    Comments have been made that Kobe takes more difficult shots than Jordan(ie. more jump shots).True! But that is what makes Kobe more dangerous. Kobe can drain a shot from any where on the court. Kobe has more of a variety of shots and is harder to cover than Jordan.A defender has to be in Kobe’s face at all times. Other players like Michael Jordan and Lebron James who are primarily deep post players, a defender only has to play them tough in the post area. Because Kobe is a better all around shooter and is harder to cover, Kobe makes his teammates better than Jordan ever could. Notice that Odom’s and Gasol’s field goal percentages went up when playing with Kobe.

      The mark of a true leader, is when they leave, their teammates continue to function at a high level, although they cannot make up for his absence. That’s what happened when Jordan left the Bulls. His high level of leadership and standards for excellence caused the Bulls to still put out great performances, although Jordan’s absence kept them from championships. Wilt was dominant because he was 7 feet tall in a league where the average center was 6’8″. Magic and Bird had better players, but Jordan showed himself to be a better leader. He started with less and ended up with more, much more than those two splendid players.

    Your logic is busted and unacceptable, CAREER STATS are there for a purpose, and besides KOBE is still playing today with only 32 GAMES left to officially match all of MJ’s GAMES PLAYED with the opportunity to play more games than MJ after this season, now let me see him reach all MJ’s achievements in 5 more yrs, when it is obvious he is already declining. It will only further the gap of his CAREER STATS with MJ’s the more he push his luck after this year.

      Citing 3 great games where Kobe played well doesn’t make a player great for his career. It just makes you look silly for even saying so. TMAC once had 60+ points in less than 3 quarters. Does that make him better than Jordan too?

      P.S. Although Kobe has 34 game winners, he is only a 27% shooter in game winning shot attempts. Jordan hit 56% of the game winning shots he attempted in his career. So answer me this: Based on their percentages, if you were a coach, who would you rather have shooting the game winning shot?

Go to ANY reliable website with a list of Jordan’s game winners and only 22 are listed. 28 Jordan game winners if you count those won by free throws. The fact that RTG made this number of game winners up makes his whole list of stats unreliable. Kobe has 34 game winners and will likely add to that list before his career ends. He will totally eclipse Jordan’s 28 game winners.

    By the way, that argument you gave me for why Kobe makes his teammates better than Jordan is one of WEAKEST ARGUMENTS I have ever heard. I expected a better fight out of you. You can do better than that.

Numbers don’t lie, statistically Jordan was a better player period, but that was then. Comparing another sport, do you think that Joe Montana could play the way he did in today’s NFL, HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But do you think that we would have sucked? Now he may have not have been the player that he was, but he still would have been great, talent is talent; and when you got it you got it. But to answer your question, the reason that Bulls’ players got better when Jordan left, was because they were shooting the ball more. Any idiot could see that and understand that. Jordan’s court presence was absent so who had to pick up the slack, other players. If Kobe left today I bet that the rest of the Lakers’ teams stats would go up too.       And points per field goal attempt is affected largely by free throws. With the rules changing in early 2000′s to ban hand checking on the perimeter and tightening up the rules to benefit slashing guards who you can’t even look at them without a foul call when they take it to the basket, Kobe gets a bunch of free throw points off ticky tack fouls. Imagine Jordan played in this era of rules. He was ten times the slasher that Kobe is. He would be scoring way more points per field goal attempt.

Only problem with their list is that they double counted some of his game winners from February 16,1989 through November 13,1990. That is a total of 5 incorrect additions.     Take 24536 times 1.316 = 32289(for Jordan’s stats)

    So the math on that website was absolutely CORRECT. CLASS IS NOW DISMISSED!

At the end of the day achievements would make the difference. And nobody so far dominated the game of basketball like michael jordan did.

    I believe both Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan defined the game of basketball. However, Kobe “The Black Mamba” Bryant is the greatest, because Phil Jackson said Kobe Bryant is a better player and also because he scored 81-points, which Jordan never has.

    Additionally, I think Jordan’s era was easier than today. Today, a team is allowed to double team, triple team a player to stop him from scoring. In MJ’s, it was mainly one-on-one. Kobe’s ability to score in traffic sets him apart from MJ and establishes him as a better offensive player.

      Jordan was by far the better ALL AROUND PLAYER… Jordan was more physical, had a better inside game and short range shot and drove to the basket a lot more, hence the better shooting percentages. Jordan also played a lot harder than Kobe does, especially on defense. That is where Jordan differentiates himself from Kobe. Jordan was night in and night out the best player on the floor because he shined on both offense and defense. He always outplayed everyone and thats why he has so many MVP awards.

      If Jordan was in the league right now while in his prime, he would be THE dominant player, better than Kobe and LeBron hands down. He would beat both of them on the offensive and defensive end o the floor. MJ could defend both of those guys well, but they WOULD not be able to defend MJ… he would take them to the hoop and score every time. He’s too quick and too creative.

    Ok number one. Kobe scored 81 points all fun and games right? This proves he does what he does every game… he is a ball hog. If you play good hard team basketball no one is ever going to score 81 points.

    As far as the athletes discussion is concerned yes every guy who hits the floor today is an athlete, but there are some problems. Referees today seem to have competition amongst themselves to see who can blow the whistle the most. Basketball can be a very physical defensive minded sport. Today basketball has turned into a run and gun scoring minded sport there is an infatuation with scoring so its what guys want to do now. Nobody really turns into a superstar quietly defending his heart out. Great defense is sometimes quiet unnoticed.

    The greatest athletes aren’t always the greatest defenders. You question this? Go look at Aaron Craft of the Ohio state Buckeyes. Usually one of the shortest on the floor but always defends his heart out. Defense is effort and scheme and doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with being a great athlete. The guy who is absolutely determined to do anything he can to keep the guy in front of him from scoring will prevail. There aren’t many skills to playing defense you have to be light on your feet and put forth the effort.

    I agree that Jordan is ultimately better, but Kobe’s 3-point game, in my opinion, is superior to that of Jordan’s. Also, remember that Kobe came in straight out of high school and didn’t start for his first two years and wasn’t the number one option on his team really until the 04-05 season after Shaq left, which Jordan had always been the #1 option.
    But regardless of that fact, I would still say Jordan is better.

    Pretty tough call to make either way. Yeah, Jordan definitely owns some of these stats and they won’t be broken. But Kobe has the opportunity to surpass him in things such as NBA titles and All-star appearances.

    Personally, I think a big difference between the two is the different generations in which they played. In the NBA now, the players on average are much stronger, faster, and bigger all due to training styles and better overall workout programs. Another important thing to consider about the NBA now is that it has 15 more years of play development. This means that players are learning how to guard these great players more efficiently.

    Obviously you can’t extrapolate from that and say that Kobe would have been better than MJ had they played at the same time, but that would be the only way to truly see who is the best. Unless you had an opportunity to put these two players into the same generation and have them battle it out throughout their careers, there really is no way to tell.

    On another note, I would say they are absolutely equal in their will to win. I’m young, but I’ve seen enough Jordan tapes to compare his assassin’s mentality to Kobe’s on an equal field. I believe that both players possess an equally, unmatched will to win by any other players in NBA history.

    Kobe has 8 all-NBA 1st teams and 8 all-defensive 1st teams not 6. He also has 4 all star MVPs now. This is an interesting piece, but pretty inaccurate. Also, RTG’s comment has so many errors it’s not worth addressing them. I think MJ was better, but Kobe’s longevity should definitely be counted for something. People usually discredit his accomplishments saying he’s had a longer career, but it should only add to his legacy. There are so many factors that go into this argument that it is difficult to say how close these two actually are.

Kobe is lucky enough to play in an era when there is no handchecking allowed on the perimeter and the rules now favor guards who get to the free throw line on almost every drive to the hoop. Considering Jordan’s style of play, he would have probably increased his scoring averages by 5-10 points per game in the modern era.

      Jordan already blows kobe’s scoring averages out of the water as it is. Imagine with no handchecking defense. Glad you brought up the differences in the era’s.

        Zone buddy. Its alot harder to score 1 on 1 on a zone, that and I can easily say that Kobe is the least protected “star” when it comes to driving to the hope. With a zone in place and contact on every drive to the basket its probably pretty hard to score yet he still scores his 25.

        I’m not saying Kobe is better than Jordan but I get annoyed with ppl just ignoring some pretty big changes in the game. No need to discredit what Kobe has done to make the Jordan Myth bigger than what it already is

    bill russell was the greatest player EVER they changed the very dimensions of the floor because of him. changed rules because of him.

    jordan holds no records, at least no major records. he’s not even the best of his era.

    reggie miller scored more in his career.

    karl malone did too.

    david robinson had more points in a one game than jordan ever had.

    kobe plays against guys like durant and lebron, 2 freaks of nature.

    jordan had no such competition.

    thing is, kobe has still come the closest to wilts 100.

      How about the highest per season scoring average in NBA history, and the highest NBA Finals scoring average ever. Considering he has 6 championships, and won 100% of the time he made it to the finals, always finals MVP, and the highest finals scoring average ever, i’d say that is THE most MAJOR records.

      Sure Wilt scored 100 once, and Kobe scored 81 in a meaningless game against the Raptors. But where a champion is made and greatness is measured is during the NBA Finals where the games actually mean something.

      P.S. i’m intrigued by the Bill Russell GOAT comment. I tend to agree that you can’t argue with championships and i’d be willing to discuss and have that debate about Russell being the true GOAT.

      But also keep in mind Russell played in an era where there were a helluva lot less teams in the league to compete against for the championship. And he also played with many HOF players on those 8 straight championship teams.

      Agree he’s great, recognize the feat of 11 chips….but still have to lean towards Jordan as the GOAT given his skill level.
