Wizards Gun Feud Gets Letterman’s Top 10 Treatment

January 5, 2010 – Chip Patterson

Chip Patterson, recent graduate of University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, writes for TheHoopDoctors.com and serves as Basketball Editor for BusterSports.com.

The Gilbert Arenas-Javaris Crittenton gun drama has taken several twists and turns since the story first broke.  Recently, Arenas met with federal prosecutors to try and put an end to the situation before things got out of hand.  After voluntarily meeting with federal prosecutors at the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and detectives of the Metropolitan Police Department, Arenas’ attorney released an official statement which made the entire ordeal to appear like a “joke.”

On Monday, December 21st, I took the unloaded guns out in a misguided effort to play a joke on a teammate. Contrary to some press accounts, I never threatened or assaulted anyone with the guns and never pointed them at anyone.

Joke or not, I now recognize that what I did was a mistake and was wrong. I should not have brought the guns to DC in the first place, and I now realize that there’s no such thing as joking around when it comes to guns even if unloaded.

I know many jokes, but if I was presented with a firearm, chuckling is hardly my first reaction.  It has however brought about a slew of “Washington Bullets” jokes across the blogosphere and Areans even referred to himself as “John Wayne” on his Twitter account.  Many columnists have unleashed their fury on both Arenas and Crittenton, calling for suspensions, fines, and even bans from playing.  But in situations like these we need to remember it’s okay to make some jokes, after all their poker game obviously ended in a “draw!”

So of course, it was no surprise when the reigning king of Late Night returned to work on Monday that he pick on the Wiz for his first “Top 10″ of the New Year.  Personally, I find Letterman’s entire 10 to be a little “meh” but there are certainly some great digs here – current favorite being #2.

Gil’s no gangsta. Probably the only person he’d ever shoot would be himself. However, his explanation that taking a gun out was “a joke” shows what a moron he is.
