Selecting the 2012 Team USA Olympic Roster

Nearly one and a half years after The Redeem Team captured the gold medal in China it is time to start thinking of the next team that will not dominate its way to the top of international hoops.

Basketball has taken off since the Dream Team trounced its way to the top back in ‘92 but Team USA suffered early last decade as other teams placed a target on our backs.

As a country we got cocky and thought we could put anyone on our national team and our opponents would stick their tails between their legs, but that did not happen, and 2004 did, when we finished third.

I remember Dwyane Wade talking about how his bronze medal is now used as a coaster and the days of Team USA losing are long over.

Our national team is absolutely loaded, nearly impossible to make, and Jerry Colangelo is going to break more than a few hearts the next few years when he tells the likes of Rajon Rondo, Joe Johnson, Monta Ellis, and Derrick Rose, “Sorry guys, we are too good and we do not need you.”

It truly is unbelievable when players of that caliber get cut from a team but here is my 12-man Team USA 2012 roster.

C – Dwight Howard, Amar’e Stoudemire
PF – Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony
SF – LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala
SG – Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Brandon Roy
PG – Chris Paul, Deron Williams

First thing you should notice is only two PGs as opposed to the 2008 team that had three. There are more than a few players that can run the point on Team USA other than Paul and Williams; namely Kobe, LeBron, Roy, Iguodala, and Wade and they are just fine as third team PGs.

The 2008 team featured Carlos Boozer, who did not play, and there are going to be players that do not play on the 2012 team and I think it will be Andre Iguodala and/or Brandon Roy.

Michael Redd and Tayshaun Prince both made the 2008 team and will likely not be invited back but different players will assume their roles. Our sharpshooter is Kevin Durant and Andre Iguodala is the second best perimeter defender on the team behind only Kobe.

Amar’e Stoudemire actually turned down the 2008 squad to rehabilitate his surgically repaired knee but I hope he joins the 2010 team, as it will likely be his last chance to shine on the international stage.

One of the biggest questions is, will Kobe play?

I think he will play because after he won without Shaq last season and with the type of season he is having this year, I am done doubting him. If Jason Kidd can play as an old man, Kobe will too.

Over the course of the next two years, Team USA will compete in the 2010 FIBA World Championship (Aug. 28-Sept. 12 in Turkey) and the 2012 Summer Olympic Games (July 26-Aug. 12 in London, England).

I know its a bit early for specific predictions given that many playerse will develop quite a bit before 2012 and may open some eyes on the selection committee in doing so,  but based on their current status here is the list of players up for Team USA candidacy but will most likely be turned down and will have to wait until 2016.

@Paul, JOSH SMITH is one of the greatest power fowards in Hawks history . TO ME IN MY PROSPECTIVE
      John Wall
      Jamal Crawford
      Josh Smith
      Kevin Durant
      Joe Johnson
      Russel Westbrook
      Kobe Bryant
      Shannon Brown
      Lamar Odom
      Lebron James
      OJ Mayo
      Dwayne Wade
      Rajon Rondo
      Evan Turner
      AND MORE

      • Paul

@LokoPolo, I agree that Josh Smith is a very talented young player and goes unrecognized as one of the best defenders in the league, but as far as the best power forward in Hawks history, I disagree. There was a guy named Bob Pettit who played for the Hawks 50 years ago who Josh Smith couldn’t hold a candle to. Given, the Hawks were in St. Louis and Milwaukee then, but they were still known as the Hawks.
I find your team interesting, but I highly disagree with you on it.
Your picks of Josh Smith, Jamal Crawford, and Joe Johnson (who by the way I think is one of the most overpaid players in the NBA, along with Rashard Lewis and Vince Carter) makes me think you’re a Hawks fan and that you picked them because you like them, not because they really deserve to be there. I did consider Josh Smith myself, but in this age of a glut of talented power forwards, I opted for others I feel are even better.
I think Lamar Odom is too old now let alone in 2012. I never would consider him myself mainly because he’s a bench player.
Which brings me to Shannon Brown, not only is he a bench player, but he plays limited minutes for one. I don’t understand why you would mention him even if there’s a defecit of talented 2 guards in the league.
As for Kobe, he’s good now, but playing on that broken finger is bound to take it’s toll later (I think it already has considering his abysmal shooting performances since the “accident”). It couldn’t have healed right and that will affect his shot, which he not only relies on now, but but will need to rely on even more as he ages. I just don’t think he’ll be up to par come 2012.
I just don’t think O.J. Mayo is good enough, even if he is a 2 guard.
I did consider Rajon Rondo and Russell Westbrook for the 1s, but I picked Deron Wiliams and Tyreke Evans. 1) because I think Deron Williams is better than both of them 2) Tyreke will be better than the both of them (have you seen how smooth he is) and 3) I don’t like Rajon Rondo. If I couldn’t think of better points than Rondo, I would pick him. But now that the Kings put tyreke at the 2, things may change. But there’s also Stephen Curry to consider.
And I think it’s a little premature to consider John Wall or especially Evan Turner considering they haven’t played one official game in the NBA. Look at the mistake they made choosing Laettner for the Dream Team; they shouldve choose Shaq. I could see if it was like a LeBron situation where it was clear he was going to shine, but it’s nothing like that.
The rest of your team I agree with. But realistically; considering the way they’ve been picking the team, it’s not likely they’ll send the best out there in 2012 anyway.

    • Paul

Here is my revised 2012 team:

      LeBron James
      Chris Bosh
      Dwight Howard
      Chris Paul
      Dwayne Wade
      Kevin Durant
      Carmelo Anthony
      Carlos Boozer
      Brook Lopez
      Deron Williams
      Brandon Roy
      Russell Westbrook

You notice I took out Tyreke and put in Westbrook. That’s because they put Tyreke at the 2. I thought he was fine at the 1, but what do I know. I do not think there should be 3 2s and only 2 1s in an Olympic team; maybe in an All-Star game, but not in the olympics. So I opted for Westbrook (my original and current leading candidate).
Also, I was tempted to take Boozer out in favor of Griffin, who’s acting absolutely crazy right now. I entertained the thought of putting in Griffin originally, considering how he regularly molested college kids in OK, but I didn’t think he’d be doing it to pros so soon. I was never worried about his leg considering it was a broken bone and not any of the tendons or ligaments or anything and a properly healed bone fracture could be better than ever (see Jordan 25 years ago). But I would like to see Boozer get one last stab at it. Besides, I know that Griffin would be more than ready for the 2016 team. But I wouldn’t argue with anybody who picks him for 2012.

      • Paul

And also, Amare Stoudamire is a better center than Brook Lopez…right now. I didn’t originally pick him because he was playing the forward position when I picked the team. And I do not plan on putting him on now either, because I just don’t think his knee will hold out that long (see my previous explanation about the differences between bone fractures and ligament/ tendon tears).

  • John

You’ve got to question whether or not Rondo will ever be truly considered, with all of his maturity issues.

  • bob

OJ Mayo went to my highschool
I hope he makes it on the team
Im a huge fan of his
If not this year, then hopefully next year
No matter what though, team usa brings home the gold

  • olympic weight

The list is great, they are top players. I am not the real fan of the USA but I believe that this is one of the best team in the world and Olympic gold medal is not a problem for them.

  • Jeramy Melvin

The 2010 USA Olympic starting squad,
C – Dwight Howard — I like Amar’e stoudemire better then d howard, but he puts up more blocks and rebounds then stoudermire, he’ll draw a huge fan base too.
PF – Carmelo Athoney – Athoney does more for his team than chris bosh, Athony is a natural leader, chris bosh just doesn’t have enough experience to me.
SF – LeBron James – No one is even close to being able to fill this guys shoes on team usa he is a power house and can not only play Small forward but every spot on the floor.
SG – Kobe Bryant, Nobodys better…….
PG – Chris Paul, best at what he does and thats seeing the floor other guys look Paul sees, best point guard besides Derrick rose- the best # 1.

  • Jeramy Melvin

oh my bad 2012 starting squad.

  • Ryan

It’ll be really interesting to see what direction the team goes with in the 1 position. Traditionally they like the Chris Paul archetype. Genuinely do not see Iguodala or Roy making the team this year though.

  • Alex A

    My Starting 5 would be:

C- Dwight Howard, Best Defensive Player I have ever seen
PF-Amar’e Stoudemire, Amazing comeback with the NY Knicks (even though I’m from NYC, I hate the Knicks and love the NJ Nets and Boston Celtics)
SF- LeBron James, Best all-around player
SG- Kobe Bryant, NBA Finals veteran and he gets lots and lots of game winners
PG- Derrick Rose, MVP in 2011 NBA Playoffs

    • Paul

Yes, Derrick Rose has made his talents apparent to everybody by now. But don’t you think they should choose a true point type? You already have enough scoring with LeBron and Kobe; it would be kind of redundant having Rose go nut with them. I’d rather have a true point, like Paul or Westbrook, personally; but I’m sure they’ll pick Rose.
