Magic Johnson’s First Game in the NBA

I realize my colleague Doc Browntorious yesterday already gave a shout out to Magic Johnson on his 50th birthday. But as a fellow point guard I figured we can’t ever have enough Magic highlights, right? The reel below from MJ’s very first NBA game shows a few clips that were representative of his entire career. The winning, the smiling, the camaraderie with his teammates, and of course about half way through the reel you will will see a steal then an amazing open court behind the back dribble. In my mind no one did the open court crossover or behind the back dribble into a score or pass like Magic did. The guy was on another level for point guards. Enjoy the throwback:

I remember seeing the Kareem/Magic relationship develop. In the beginning, it was Kareem trying to chill the kid out (’cause let’s be honest- Cap was kind of a dick), but by the end of Jabbar’s career, Magic had nurtured him out of his shell. It was a battle of wills and the optimist won.
