Could Jason Williams aka ‘White Chocalate’ Don a Grizzlies Jersey Next Season?

August 12, 2009 – Dr. J-Water

Is it just me or did some of you reading this feel that Jason Williams, also known as the flashy point guard ‘White Chocolate’, retired too early. He certainly had something left in the tank. After one of his most steady seasons where he acted as floor general to the Miami Heat, and guided them to an NBA title as the starting point guard, J-Will played the following season then retired.

The strange thing about it was Williams was playing some of his best fundamental basketball at the time of his retirement. He had just agreed to a one year deal with the LA Clippers then retired out of the blue. Certainly at the time of his retirement Williams had lost a step or two in speed, but it seemingly helped his overall game as he wasn’t so prone to high risk passing and poor shot selection. He had finally become the steady hand that ever contending team needs at the point, then he retires.

Well, for all your fans of White Chocolate you might get another dose this upcoming season. New York claimed him off waivers and they have 5 days to sign him. Otherwise he may end up back at his old team, the Memphis Grizzlies….

The Grizzlies’ bid to reunite with point guard Jason Williams got sweeter recently when the playmaker known as “White Chocolate” visited FedExForum for a workout.

Williams spent Monday talking with and going through basketball drills for Griz owner Michael Heisley, general manager Chris Wallace and members of the coaching staff.

The 33-year-old is an unrestricted free agent looking to sign with an NBA team after a year off.

“He looks in great shape,” Heisley said. “I think Jason still has a lot to offer.”

No deal was signed, even though the Griz are believed to want Williams on a short-term, minimum-salary deal. New York, which claimed Williams off waivers earlier this month, is said to be still negotiating with him, and Orlando reportedly has interest in the 6-1 flashy floor general.

Personally i’d love to see J-Will make a successful comeback. I just don’t understand why he’d want to do that with the Grizzlies where he certainly would be playing third fiddle to the Grizzlies future back court in Mike Conley, OJ Mayo, and possibly even Marcus Williams depending on what sort of training camp he turns in. Or maybe Williams isn’t looking to log many minutes and instead is looking for a suitor to pay him a nice chunk of change to act as the veteran bench coach for the young back court of Conley and Mayo.

Racist rant! How dare you invoke the words white chocolate in reference to Jason Williams. You are labeling him based on his color. If I were to use other colorful language about other NBA players you would have the NAACP or Al Sharpton on me. It is a 2 way street. If you want to end racism quit using color as a defining trait. I am well aware of Jason’s nickname from many years back but it does not excuse the continued use of it. The same with White men cant jump. You and I both know that if I came up with a movie black men cant swim I would be labeled a racist. I am sick of people getting bent about racism when they are just as much to blame for perpetuating it. Be a man and stand up to all racism!

I’ve been a fan of Jason back in his Sacramento days. I hope he makes it. So he’s 33 years old? The guy still has the attitude though. Good luck J-Will.
