NBA Says When Times Are Tough, Just Advertise Booze?

Since 1991 there has been an NBA ban on courtside advertising of liquor brands. Why you ask? Hell, I guess for the same reason some states ban advertising of cigarettes and prescription drugs….whoever enacted the rule wanted to avoid the widespread unnecessary use of a product that can cause addiction.

Well in a stunning move the NBA and the team owners yesterday reversed the longtime ban on liquor advertising and went as far as too announce their intentions to write policies on allowing advertising on team websites, in the arena retail spots, and in other arena promotions. Why would the league do such a thing you might ask?

Because of the ‘economic downturn’ in the US, the league feels this reversal of the ban will open up ‘new potential revenue streams’ for all 30 teams. “We are always trying to find ways to drive more revenue and this falls in line with that,” said Chris Granger, senior vice president of team marketing and business operations for the NBA. “The vote was simply to rescind the prohibition of teams selling courtside liquor ads. We are working on what other opportunities will exist.”

All I can say is W-O-W! Personally, I don’t have any problem with people drinking, in fact I partake in the tipping of some cold ones on the regular with my buddies like any other guy. But for a league (NBA) that is constantly worried about their ‘image’ with Corporate America, doesn’t this send the wrong message? Doesn’t this decision basically say: ’sure we have morals and principles, but when times are tough, and the price is right…..screw it’.

Ah well, looks like the league just sold their soul? In the meantime, someone mix me up a gin and tonic. I’m getting thirsty just talking about this….
