Video: Did Gary Payton Get Rondo’d?

November 12, 2008 – Dr. Dime
In the NBA TV broadcast analysis of the Lakers/Dallas game tonight, Gary Payton made some pretty bold statements about Rajon Rondo and his place on the Championship Celtics last season. Payton essentially implied that Rondo didn’t deserve his championship ring, that he just was lucky to be on a great team. In the video below, Payton basically equates Rondo to a ‘towel waver’ in the mold of a Jon Salley or Will Purdue.
I have the utmost respect for Gary Payton’s career and his game, however I gotta side with Rondo on this one. Rondo was a very key piece to the Celtics success last year, and personally I believe without an athletic, selfless, and hard working young point guard to distribute the rock to the ‘Big Three’ last year it may not have been such a dream season for the C’s.
If anything I think Payton was just showing a bit of his jealousy towards how early Rondo was able to win a title in his career, after Payton played many many years in the league as a premier point guard before he was able to get his. And to top it off, Payton in the twilight years of his career had to follow around the championship contending teams like the Lakers and Heat by signing for peanuts to finally get his ring. I guess Gary Payton has some guilt lingering about being a bit of a ‘towel waver’ at times himself on the Heat in their championship run?
I’d say Payton’s statements backfired. He just got Rondo’d!

[...] While we’re at it… let’s all give Gary Payton a collective middle finger for implying that Rajon Rondo doesn’t deserve his ring. [...]
He rips ML Carr too??
Biggest towel waver: Jack Haley. Sounds like an idea for a post for the Doctors…
LOL, actually that isn’t a bad post idea Zoner. But Rondo certainly is not on that list…
[...] Wow–Gary Payton got his diss on last night! He even throws one at ML Carr. ML Carr? From the Hoop Doctors: [...]
That “towel waver” was in at crunch time while GP sat and watched, ironically waving a towel!
Payton needs a towel . . . to cry in.
Wasnt he, who got his arse handed it to him with the Lakers along with Karl ‘Deadbeat Dad’ Malone and Kobe! He couldn’t WIN with Kobe! HENCE, WE ALL KNOW THAT GLOVE HAD A BIG ARSE HOLE IN IT AFTER HE LEFT SEATTLE! WUDA PUNK!
I watched Gary Payton play with the Celtics when they were bad a few years back, and I watched Rondo play on a horrible Celtic team in his rookie year two years ago. I can honestly say that I enjoyed and appreciated watching Rondo both than and now more than I ever enjoyed watching GP. While Rondo is selfless and, I think, a potentially great point guard, GP was a selfish cock who thought he was better than he actually was, and did nothing to help the Celtics get any better. There’s a reason Danny Ainge didn’t want to trade Rondo in the KG deal.
[...] was a passenger. Watch the vid on this page and see if you think Payton is a bit bitter. Video: Gary Payton Says Rajon Rondo Didn’t Deserve Championship Ring! | thehoopdoctors.com I seem to recall Payton doing a lot of towel waving on the Celtics bench and that was when our [...]
Actually, while Payton’s comments are pretty outrageous (let’s face it, how many good role players has Charles Barkley called ‘horrible’ – these guys are paid to make inflammatory comments, and Payton made a career out of that anyways) – Payton was not on the sidelines waiving a towel in the Heat championship run – he hit one game winner in a crucial game in the finals, and the last field goal in regulation in another key game, and usually closed out games in the regular season and playoffs rather than Jason Williams. While his role was greatly diminished, I don’t think any truly knowledgeable basketball fan can say he didn’t contribute to that title, especially in the finals.
Gary Peytons Career > Rondo’s Career
Rondo is a good player with the potential to be great, payton is just pissed because Rondo go a ring earlier than he did. This year Rondo i proving himself even more, last year against the pistons Rondo played amazingly well, Rondo deserved a ring.
John King is on the NBA show? What does he know about the NBA? Plus he must be exhausted from all the ass munching he did on Obama the last year and a half. Give him some rest Cable Television!
