I'm a Suns fan so of course I love Bryan Colangelo and all things Colangelo. However, be careful not to put him on quite the pedestal you seem to have. He struck gold when he brought Nash back to the Suns, but a lot of the other deals he was involved with or responsible for were pretty major disasters. He was there when McDyess got lured away to Denver. He was partly to blame for the knee-jerk overreaction to signing Gugliotta to make up for that. He traded Kidd for Marbury, a massive step downward (although arguably necessary).

His good moves do outweigh his bad moves. However, not enough to have brought the team a championship -- or even to the Finals. He should turn Toronto into a serious contender, though, and I'd love to one day face (and beat) his team in the Finals.

Well, a masterpiece would have to include a full roster and an adequate bench...neither of which now exist in Toronto.

Giving up so many pieces to acquire the second highest paid player in the league is fine if you have others to fall back on. We don't. We also now have few movable pieces in order to add any help.

While I can see optimism on paper, I find myself wondering what happens the first time we have 2 or 3 guys that need a few nights off.

I think the JO Deal was some classic Colangelo. Yes there is a risk tied to this deal. You end up really banking on Jose Calderon being able to play to same level he has going forward with no safety net in Ford. You also have the health concern with O'Neal.

But even if this deal were to fail in a huge way. The cap money you get in 2010 makes this a deal worth making. Bryan Colangelo is always thinking both in the present and in the future and that is key in what you want out of management.

Great post, Doc. I love Colangelo too. The guy is one of the best GM's in the league for sure. Its nice to see him succeeding outside the shadow of his father.
