Remember When Blake Griffin Jumped Over a Kia? He Wanted It To Be a Convertible

Blake Griffin
Five years later, the truth has come out about Blake Griffin’s decision to jump over a Kia during the 2011 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

The skinny?

It wasn’t his idea at all.

While making an appearance on Barstool Sports’ Pardon My Take podcast, Griffin revealed that he actually wanted to jump over a convertible (h/t Bleacher Report):

I wanted to jump over a convertible, but I wasn’t allowed to. It had to be a Kia Optima.

I don’t know if you guys have stood next to a Kia Optima, but it’s a pretty tall vehicle, and there’s no way I was going to make it over the entire thing, over Baron Davis in the sunroof. So I opted for the hood, and then everyone was pissed that I jumped over the hood, like, ‘That was super easy.’ So it was just a lose-lose situation for me.

If it’s any consolation to Blake Griffin, I was still impressed.

And if it’s of any further consolation to him, the convertible idea would have been straight fire.

Too bad we’ll never know what that would’ve looked like.

Unless, of course, Kia releases a convertible and Griffin end his dunk-contest hiatus. Then we could totally know what his convertible jam looks like.
