LeBron Opts Out of Contract with Cavs

In order to keep some semblance of normalcy, a salary cap in the NBA exists. If not, it’d be tough to have a league when every player feels he’s worth every penny on Earth. But in the case of LeBron James, there should be no financial ceiling. It’s impossible to put a figure on what he has done monetarily for the NBA, the city of Cleveland and the Cavaliers during his time in the league. You just can’t quantify it. He has probably done more for a league financially than any player in any sport ever. But, of course, there is a salary cap so he can only earn so much.

And he’s going to make sure he gets whatever is humanly possible, as he should. LeBron has decided to opt out of his contract with the Cavs so that he can sign a more lucrative deal. The cap will go up, as the TV deal money gets factored it, so this is a wise, necessary business move for James. This is his third consecutive summer being a free agent, but he’s earned that sort of flexibility.

Though he has opted out, James can re-sign with the Cavaliers and said last week he has no intentions of leaving Cleveland again.

“I love it here in Cleveland. I have no intentions of leaving,” James told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin during the Cavaliers’ championship parade. “There are some technicalities to take care of I’ll leave up to my agent. That’s right from the horse’s mouth.
