Former Knick Anthony Mason Dies At Age 48

bigmaseIt is with a very heavy heart that we need to report on the death of Anthony Mason. ‘Tony’ or ‘Big Mase’ as he is often affectionately referred to, died earlier this morning after battling heart issues beginning with a massive heart attack a couple weeks ago.

Anthony Mason, a fringe basketball prospect who made himself into an NBA All-Star through his indomitable will and unyielding strength, died this morning at the age of 48. Mason reportedly suffered a massive heart attack a few weeks ago, and had been trying to battle back ever since.

I hesitate to agree that Mason was a ‘fringe’ player of any sort. The guy was a beast. But I think what NBA.com was getting at was that he was basically Ben Wallace before Ben Wallace was around. A blue collar guy on the outside of most draft boards, that worked his tail off to ensure he provided considerable value to whatever team he played for. He was fearless, yet instilled fear in opposing players across the league. You didn’t want to take it to the lane soft on Big Mase, or you ended up on your butt. Just ask Michael Jordan and the Bulls. The battles in the early 90’s between the Bulls and Knicks were epic.

That said, he was well liked and highly respected not only amongst teammates but among his competition. You can get a flavor from some of the messages on online already today:

Charles Oakley

Michael Jordan

“I’m deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Anthony Mason. Mase was one of the toughest competitors of his era. While on the Hornets, he was beloved by fans throughout the Carolinas for his hard-nosed play and skill on the court. The Hornets organization extends its condolences to his entire family.”

Teammate Patrick Ewing

“My heart is heavy after learning we lost Anthony Mason last night. We were teammates on the Knicks for five great seasons. Mase came to play every night and was always ready to go to battle with me every time we stepped on the court together. I will remember him for his strength, determination and perseverance. My thoughts are with his family. May he rest in peace.”

Here is the release from his son Anthony Jr. on behalf of his family

First, I want to thank all those who offered prayers and well-wishes for my Father, our family really appreciated it. Overnight, New York City and the world lost a legend, a friend, a brother…but more than anything, our father, Anthony Mason. As you all would expect, our father—Big Mase—put up an incredible fight dealing with severe heart issues. I’m wishing this was something else I was writing, but Pops, we’ve got to let you know we love you and know you’ll always be with us.

I ask at this time that you respect our family’s privacy with regard to questions as our family takes the time to mourn.

‘Mase’ played for 6 different teams during his career, ultimately retiring in 2002-2003, but he was most fondly remembered for his time with the rough and tumble New York Knicks during their run to the 1994 NBA Finals.

RIP Anthony Mason, you won’t be forgotten.
