Melo considering sitting out rest of the year with knee issues

melositWith the New York Knicks unlikely to get anything going this season, their all-star forward Carmelo Anthony has been consistently missing games with an ailing knee injury. His knee injury has been bothering him since almost the start of the season, which has now made him consider possibly sitting out the rest of the season to fully recover.

From Steve Popper of NorthJersey.com:

“I’ve had multiple people say kind of, just shut it down or just take time off,” Anthony said. “At the end of the day it’s hard for me to just do that right now with what’s happening with the team. So I’m just trying to be smart about it.”

“We’ve got a lot of guys banged up,” Fisher said. “Amar’e (Stoudemire) will probably (rest), we’ll choose to kind of give him a space to get some recovery in tonight with back-to-back afternoon games coming up on Saturday and Sunday. So that’ll change our lineup in the front court. And Melo still has some soreness from Tuesday night and it’s kind of catching up with him, so we’ll see with him. I think he’s questionable but still possible.”

Looking at how bad the Knicks are right now at 5-22, I think it wouldn’t be an unwise decision for Anthony to sit out the rest of their games. There’s really nothing to play for this season except gaining a top draft pick in 2015, and also, the chances of gaining that high pick would tremendously increase if he does decide to sit out.

But if Anthony remains adamant about playing through his ailing knee, the Knicks may have to step in to force him to rest and prevent him from any further damage, which they may regret in the coming future. The team should protect their biggest asset.
