Nets to Retire Jason Kidd’s Number This Season

Did New Jersey Nets rookie Mason Plumlee just leak the team’s plans to retire Jason Kidd’s jersey this season?

Via The Basketball Jones from a transcription of a Bleacher Report interview with incoming NBA Rookies on how they will select their jersey numbers:

Mason Plumlee – I wanted 5, 5 is what I wore in college. I don’t want to spoil it, but I think [the Nets] are going to retire it [for Jason Kidd]. 21 was what I was going to wear next and then they were said KG might want 21. Then 00 was taken so I went with the next number, number 1. ”

Regardless of how the NBA blogosphere came across this information before the team’s official announcement, it’s a classy move for the Nets to honor their new head coach, who almost single handedly took their team from the basement of the Eastern Conference to the NBA Finals in consecutive years as a player. Can he do the same as a coach? Only time will tell…
