Top 10 Dunks Over Mt. Mutombo – Part Two

Dikembe Mutumbo

August 18, 2009 – Allen Moll

Allen Moll is an avid NBA and College Basketball fan who watches and studies games religiously and coaches youth basketball in his native Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. Allen is a regular columnist for thehoopdoctors.com, Bleacherreport.com, Fanhuddle.com as a NY Knicks and Wizards correspondent, and his own blog, Hoops Haven.

When Dikembe Mutombo ruptured his quadriceps tendon during the Rockets playoff run, the NBA lost one of it’s best shot blockers and defensive players of all time. After 18 seasons, he ranks 2nd in blocks behind only Hakeem Olajuwon and 21st in overall rebounds in NBA history. “Deke” also was an 8 time All-Star, 4 time Defensive Player of the Year, and made 3 trips to the Finals, most notably with the Sixers vs the Lakers in ’01. With such an impressive resume, he may be destined for the Hall of Fame someday, but what what basketball fans will probably remember most during his prime was his patented fingerwaving when blocking shots. While the fingerwave was meant for fun, many of the game’s best took this as an insult and always came right back at Mutombo with a vengeance. The result was Mt. Mutombo being posterized by many of the NBA’s best dunkers. Yesterday in Part One, I brought you #10 through to #6, well today let’s bring it home with#5 through #1:

#5 – Tie – Shawn Marion and Amare Stoudemire with the Suns during ’04-’05 season

#4 – Tracy McGrady with the Rockets

#3 – Shaq with the Heat in ’06

#2 – MJ with the Bulls in ’97

#1 – Vince Carter with the Raptors in ’99
